We have been having so much fun learning about maps, the continents, and the world around us. We started our new unit with painting a large world map and decorating people to look like us all around it. We built maps on the floor with blocks and pieces of felt, drew treasure maps for friends, and even went on a treasure hunt on the playground! We learned about where some different animals live on Earth, and made a book to take home based on the story we read, Me on the Map. We also made passports to use in our airport setup. The children completed an activity for each continent and collected stamps to “travel around the world”. had several lovely presentations from parents about the countries of Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia! Thank you to those of you that came in to talk with the class, and if any of you want to share another time, let me know and we would love to have you as well!
We are now switching gears to talk about birds, migration, and winter. We have been reading bird books, making play dough cardinal birds, and painting with feathers. We got to observe several real nests, and noticed that birds use yarn, hair, and even mud to build nests. We got to use various art materials to build our own nests today, and will be adding to them next week.
We have been trying out different things on Fridays, instead of show and tell, in order to encourage collaborative play and sharing. Tomorrow we will have our Maker Space building station. We will be using cardboard, paper, pipe cleaners, and tape to build creations to share with each other.
One more reminder, the weather has turned significantly colder in the past few days. Please make sure that your child has weather appropriate clothing, including a warm coat, mittens or gloves, and a hat if necessary. We like to get the children out to run around at least for a little while if possible.
