Welcome back from Winter Break! It has been so wonderful getting back together at school, and the children have been having a great time together. Now if only the weather could warm up a bit, we could be together even more.
We have spent our time back in the classroom learning about the winter season. We have experimented with melting ice, and talked about how ice is made of frozen water. We have made snowflakes in different ways through art and building, and talked about how they are all different, but have similar patterns. The children have been practicing writing their names, letters, and types of lines in shaving cream, salt, and play dough. They painted with puffy paint to create a scene from the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. They have also been loving to play in our pretend ice skating rink! The children can “try on” the different sizes of skates and sort them out when they are finished. They have also been enjoying buying and selling “snacks” using the money in the cash register. This has been a fun collaborative play area for many of the children!
During the next week or two we will continue to learn about winter, but switch our focus to winter animals. The children will be talking about hibernation, adaptation, and migration through games, songs, art, and science.
On Friday, instead of show and tell, we are going to have a “Pet Show” based on the book Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats. We ask that each child bring a stuffed animal from home to show. Every pet will be a winner! This will be an alternative way for the children to practice public speaking with their peers.
Once again, thank you for sharing your children with us!
