The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

February Honeybees

We all know it will snow again, but it is feeling like something springlike is happening. I’m at school today and can actually see grass on the hill. I think we’ll be playing out there a few more days while the playground puddles dry. We absolutely need more outside playtime, and hopefully we’ll have warm sunny days this week. I’ve been saying I can’t wait until spring when we can take our tables and activities outside, just coming in for rest time.

Before I forget… we have two or three spaces left in the Friendly Fox class for next year if you have any friends who might like to join our class. The Honeybee class is full for next year!

We wrapped up our Dinosaur study with a demonstration of how dinosaur fossils are made. Get your child to show you how they used hand motions for ‘millions of years” and for heat and pressure. After a short look at the Lunar New Year and the Winter Olympics we are headed for another big idea….OUTER SPACE. We will build our own International Space Station in the classroom. I’m asking for some big boxes so that it can be a spacious work and play space. I’d also love to borrow any extra computer keyboards you have available. These could start coming in on Thursday.

Weeks ago I wrote that we would start following Jackie and Shadow on the Big Bear Valley Cam in California. Just as I was about to introduce them to the class their nest was invaded by ravens who ate their two eggs. I’m pausing in hopes that Jackie lays more eggs in the coming days. If not I’ll try to find another Eagle nest cam.

We are about to celebrate our 4th FOURTH birthday this week and another the week after that. We will continue to learn more about moving up to the Friendly Fox class, going to tours, greeting the Friendly Fox teachers warmly, and following some of their rules.

I’d love to learn about the Winter Olympics in the coming weeks, getting to know some of the sports and introducing some ideas about good sportsmanship. I’m determined to figure out curling and create a preschool version. Some of us were showing off our ice skating in the snow this week during recess.

Tomorrow is the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Fire Horse. I’ve created some new sensory bins and we’ll try some Chinese brush painting. We can play Chinese restaurant in our play kitchen.

Thanks for all the sweet Valentines!

Warmly,

Sally
