Hello Friendly Fox Families,
We have been having lots of fun in our class over the past two weeks! Two of our Monarch butterflies came out of their chrysalises, and we got to release them together on the playground. The children sang the Garden Children song to them and have been looking for them to fly by for a visit during recess!
Our author study has been Eric Carle. We have talked about how he makes his illustrations through painting and collage, and have read many of our favorite books by him! The children all love the Brown Bear Brown Bear book, so we wrote a class book inspired by this one called, Preschoolers Preschoolers, who do you see? The children each illustrated a page for the book with a picture of themselves. They also either wrote or traced their name. We will be reading this book as a class this week!

We have been spending a lot of time talking about butterflies and caterpillars, and then naturally shifted to other kinds of bugs. We learned about how butterflies and many flying insects have symmetry. We painted, collaged, and built things with symmetry to help illustrate that concept. We talked about ladybugs and played a counting and dice game to give them spots. We created dragonfly sun catchers, and learned that they eat other bugsbut do not bite humans. We learned about bees and noticed the hexagon shape in their homes. Lastly, we have spent some time learning about spiders, and focusing on the fact that spiders have 8 legs and insects have 6 legs. We also discussed that spiders help us by eating mosquitos and other bugs that we don’t like. We talked about how even though spiders might surprise us sometimes, they are very helpful! We even found and caught a real spider and the children had a chance to observe it closely. They decided it had a “cute little face”!

We have been enjoying lots of sensory activities in our class. Play dough, kinetic sand, and bubbly water are definitely our favorites! The children are all becoming more comfortable with their classmates and teachers, and it is so much fun to see new friendships form! We have continued having lots of outside playtime, and the children especially love playing in the mud!
This week, we will be shifting our focus toward apples and the fall season. We have many fun activities planned, and hopefully we can have an apple taste test and cook our own applesauce during this month.
Thank you all for sharing your wonderful children with us.
Hannah, Wynne, and MaryAnne 🙂
