I somehow launched myself into our Thanksgiving break without a blog post, and it was one of my favorite weeks of the year. Thanks to the kids who dressed up and to a certain monster parent who came to dance with us.
We were happy to get back to school and our friends on Monday. We began the week by writing our own version of The Three Little Pigs. Some of the kids didn’t know the story, but we quickly created our own. Did you know that a pig can live in a banana? We made pig houses out of dough, bricks, sticks, wood, and straw, and the next day used glue to create 2D houses for our pigs. ( For the record, none of our pigs were eaten or killed in the course of our storytelling. One child did ask me if I liked bacon. She liked it too.)
We found that our favorite pig will always be Piggie, best friend to Gerald from the Mo Willems books. Every few days someone brings me Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus with a giant smile. I’m already thinking of some ideas for our end of the year play.
We enjoyed a yoga story on Friday with yoga teacher Janet Krones from In Balance Yoga. Her grandson Lev is a Friendly Fox. We think we might like to do more yoga in the Honeybees class.
This week we are going to talk about snow, snowflakes, and snowmen. We might even throw in a Jack and the Beanstalk story because I’ve been saving a “beanstalk” of brown paper in the closet for quite a while, and the Honeybees love the call and response nature of these classic fairytales.
This week on Wednesday we are having a visit from a Vet. I hear that she is even bringing some foster kittens to our class. We have been turning our ‘office” into an animal hospital, and wanted to talk to someone who takes care of animals.
Our forest has not sprouted yet, but our amaryllis (Bulby) is likely to be in full bloom tomorrow.
We said good by to our friend Gavin this week as he moves out west, and this week we’ll give Carrigan some big hugs as she moves back to her old house in Northern Virginia. She’s like to celebrate her time as a Honeybee with some banana bread and vanilla ice cream on Thursday.
On Friday let’s have a pajama day.
