The Honey Bees have been talking about Space this week. We read You Can’t Ride A Bicycle to the moon, a book about space travel and Hedgie Blasts Off by Jan Brett, a story about a hedgehog who saves the day.. and planet Milkopp. He unclogged the Big Sparkler and got the volcano going again. We played out the story with sparkling playdough, pretend coins, and flowers.
This week we are going to learn a little more about our moon and our solar system. Tuesday begins the Chinese LUNAR new year, and I thought we’d celebrate a little. It is the year of the PIG. I looked at authentic treats today at Oasis and purchased some red envelopes. I think big white moon cookies might be a good choice if that works for all of you. I’ll go by Our Daily Bread tomorrow.
On Friday we took a video tour of the International Space station with astronaut Suni Williams.

Each Honey Bee had a clipboard and pencil and was invited to draw/write/play while they watch the video. Sunita showed how space scientists live in low earth orbit 205 to 270 miles above the earth. The space station is moving at 17,100 miles per hour. Sunita showed us how the astronauts sleep, eat, and work in space. We’ll watch more of this video this week, but I linked to it here if you want to watch it with your child.
This week we’ll build a model solar system for our classroom, create some galactic artwork, and make air dry clay models of the moon.
