We wrapped up our long unit on polar geography, animals, and culture on Friday. We took turns being the musher or the dogs on my sled in the middle of the circle. I met with each child individually and talked about the totem pole and totem animals and created our totem for our pole. I’ll try to put it up this afternoon.
I told the kids that we were blasting off for outer space on Monday, and some of them thought that we were really going there. I had a Miss Frizzle moment.
During our space explorations we will read stories about the moon, learn about the moon landing, space scientists, the sun, our solar system and planets, and the International Space Station. We’ll watch videos of astronauts reading stories from space and learn about how astronauts brush their teeth on the space station without gravity. We will learn how astronauts travel and how they live in a world without gravity or oxygen. We’ll turn our room into our solar system and create our own 3 D asteroid belt. (Complete wit belt buckle) We will learn more about stars and talk about and create our own versions of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. We’ll play with space related sensory bins and squish some dark and sparkly interstellar dough. The honey bees will create their own 3 D spaceship that we can play in complete with controls and we’ll travel the stars and record our journeys.

I’ll leave you today with a little Arctic Fox transitioning from her summer coat to her winter white.
