We continued down the dinosaur path this week, creating our herbivore and carnivore cardboard sculptures. Our carnivore still needs his teeth, and we’ll cut them out when we get back to school. We did a demonstration during circle time about how fossils are made, and Wynne made our week by bringing in some actual fossils for us to touch and investigate, and I posted some pictures of them on our instagram page. We got to hold some gastroliths! The kids are very interested in both fossils and dinosaurs. I’m always astounded by their ability have conversations about the history of the earth and a time before humans inhabited the planet. We’ll continue to talk about being a paleontologist when we return, and we’ll make some fossils from air dry clay that we can bring home. At the end of this unit we’ll talk about extinction and why we don’t have dinosaurs any more. We’ll talk about asteroids (which we made a few weeks ago for our solar system mobile), and we’ll learn about volcanos. (Or, if you are actually in our class… we call them BOLCANOS!)
In the coming weeks we’ll start a new theme after a quick Van Gogh study. We’ll read more Dr Seuss stories, and start thinking about Spring… It’s almost time to start thinking about hatching our chickens. We’ll have a special guest come in to talk about rabbits, read us a rabbit story, and talk about how she uses rabbits to help people feel better when they are sick.
