I’m hoping this was our last very hot week because I really want to move into Fall.
We started off the week with a process based art project printing “honey comb” onto paper after applying paint to bubble wrap with a brush. We’ll continue to add layers to this multimedia project. On Monday we also started encouraging dramatic play be requesting that each child “dress up” for circle.
On Tuesday we used paint to create beautiful butterflies for our class tree. We painted the butterfly and then folded and pressed them to experiment with symmetry. We talked about what symmetry was and how butterfly wings are symmetrical.
On Wednesday we started our day with Marci’s music class. We noticed that our chrysalis had turned black, and we could see butterfly wings through the walls of the chrysalis. It emerged later that day, and we waited until Thursday to release it. We have been using the word migration when we talk about where monarch butterflies go. We have been migrating as a group to the playground.
This week we introduced pumpkins and acorns, and next week we are going to make applesauce. We’ll learn about Johnny Appleseed, do a math project based on Ten Apples Up on Top, and to a printing project with sliced apples.
Our friends Charlotte and Vickie visited the playground on Friday. Charlotte is one of our substitute teachers, and Vickie is a memory care patient she is working with. Your children bring Vickie so much joy. Charlotte and Vickie painted a box of glittering stones for the children to play with on the playground, and the children filled Vickie’s hands with wildflowers. When the children ask who she is I say she is a friend and grandmother.
We continue to work on ways to play and work together. We give them space to try to work things out on their own while staying close for support. We have seen some group high fives for “teamwork” this week. Be still my heart.
