It seemed like such a quick tiny week with two snow days this week. Maybe we should call them ice days. It was timely in that we have been talking about snowflakes and how they are formed. We learned that ice crystals have six sides, and we printed some beautiful six sided handprint snowflakes to bring home this week. Your child might tell you that once in a blue moon a snowflake has twelve sides. They know that every snowflake is different and that every snowflake is formed around a speck of dust.
We said goodbye to Carrigan this week and enjoyed a busy morning playing with two new friends who are joining us in January. Lauren and I have been telling everyone that we are having TWINS. I think they will be a fun addition to our little hive.
We have some cold rainy days this past week, and enjoyed reading a lot of books. We read two Olivia books… Olivia is a fictional pig in a series of children’s books written and illustrated by Ian Falconer. I might have to pick up a few more from the library. We also read the first Tomten book by Astrid Lindgren.
The Honeybees had a wonderful time playing with Sarah Haring, Lev’s mama from the Friendly Fox class. She did a circletime pretending to be a vet’s office, and all the children got to brush horses, take care of a snake with a stomachache, and take the temperature of a penguin. They bandaged, gave medicine, and shared lots of animal love.
This week we’ll read several of the Jan Brett winter books, retell the story of the Mitten with a giant wool mitten and stuffed animals, and make our own storytelling mittens. I’ll read some troll stories, Jan Brett’s The Three Bears, and show the kids where the Arctic is on the map. We’ll make our own Northern Lights, and I’d like to start growing some crystals in our classroom.
Please remember that Friday is a half day for all students with no after school program. We’ll return to school on January 6.
