The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

Honeybees :: Week 9

Dear Honeybee Families,

October has been glorious, and it has been so nice to lose our socks in the sandbox and have our door open while we are inside. This week we welcomed Sedona back and played with pumpkins and the elusive Rainbow people that are hiding in our school. I love that the Bluebirds have even joined in and are trying to lure him into their traps. This is all just in time for our art focused November. For the next three weeks we’ll be learning about a few famous artists and then becoming the ARTIST. We’ll learn art vocabulary and new ways to express ourselves as we answer the question “What really is ART?” We’ll work on both individual and collaborative art works and put on a virtual art show that we can share with our families near and far. On the last day before Thanksgiving Break we’ll have an art focused costume day, and your child can come as their favorite color, artist, work of art, or art concept… or anything that sparks their imagination.

This past week we have liked carving our pumpkin into Rainbow Man’s house, playing in our pumpkin sensory bins, and wearing our new rainbow hued playsilks. We made some bright textured paintings that we created as a group to use glue to create houses for the Rainbow Man. We created a real rainbow in our room with a prism and the overhead projector and started learning the song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

Here we are in blustery November! We’ve had so many beautiful fall days outside, but I’m not ready for the cold! Good gear is the key to being outside as much as possible in the Honeybee class. The kids need warm gear that they can work themselves. Their number one frustration during the day is waiting for us to put their shoes and coats on. Take a look at your child’s shoes and next time shop for something they can put on and take off. It saves them so much frustration, and we get to be outside faster… and having fun faster. We’ll teach them how to do “the flip” with their coats. Please chose mittens instead of gloves. I can not fit 100 fingers into gloves without crying myself.

I’m looking for some flexible wire and styrofoam to use during our art month if that is something you have around the house. I’m also collecting those squeeze pouch tops that are round.I might send out some other requests for recycling. We are going to be building a robot sculpture if you have anything cool and robot-like.

Thanks for sharing these amazing Honeybees with us. They have grown so much in the past eight weeks.
