The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

Kindergarten Superstars :: Week 26

The Kindergarten class missed Angie this week, but we tried to keep their week playful and full. Together, we learned about Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, and the Colorado River. We read about the geology and history of the Canyon and watched a video about many of the recreational activities that people enjoy there today. We mapped Arizona and the park on both the globe and a map of the United States, ,and wrote a collaborative acrostic poem based on the word Arizona. We made oil pastel drawings of the canyon landscape while we watched a video about white water rafting on the Colorado River.

The class loved incorporating a tea set into their pretend kitchen and asked to add babies to their room. They spent a lot of time playing police officer and animal control officer, all while taking care of their babies. In math this week we worked on determining greater than or less than with two digit numbers. We also experimented with unifix cubes and geoboards.

We had a special guest speaker come in and talk about rabbits. She talked about rabbit care and behavior, and the class had many wonderful questions about Oreo Cottontail. Alison brought her mama bunny, Belle, and we talked about different kinds of rabbits. She said that Oreo is a silver fox, while Belle is a blue lop. She told them about taking Belle and her other rabbits to help people feel good when they are sick and getting treatment.

The kindergarten class enjoyed a design challenge with a Cranium fort building set. I posted a lot of pictures of their attempts on Instagram. They had to talk to each other and work collaboratively to set their structures to stand up. They finally built a house big enough for all of them to get in together.
