The Meow Cats are still playing with the Castles and still working on Rainbow the dragon, but we have been talking about birds, our birdfeeders, birds in the winter, and migration. They know that our butterfly was going to migrate towards Mexico, and today we read about geese migrating as the weather gets colder. We’ve been drawing and painting birds, playing with bird sensory bins, and making dough birds. Today we looked at some bird’s nests and talked about the way that birds will sometimes use yarn, paper or animal hair to make their nests warm and cozy for their babies in the spring. We talked about nests for babies and eggs… that birds nests are not year round houses for birds. Our feeders are full and we are watching for bird visitors. Next week we will make them more special treats and make our own birdwatching journals.
Tomorrow we are going to play out the story of Stone Soup. I read it to them a few days ago, and we’ll read it again as we cook. I will bring in organic vegetable broth, some potatoes, carrots, celery, parsley, noodles, and a bag of organic mixed vegetables. Please have your child bring a vegetable from home if they want. We will chop and mix in the morning, and I’ll cook the soup in the pressure cooker in the early arrival classroom. We’ll eat the soup for snack. Please bring your regular snack, and the soup will be completely optional. There will be no show and share tomorrow, but I think it would be fun to wear our pjs to school.
I’ll continue with birds and bird stories next week, and we’ll continue to read more Jan Brett stories. We welcomed a new friend to our class this week, and it feels like he has been here all year.
One quick reminder. It is important to us that your child not bring candy to school in their lunch boxes. We tell them that candy is a “home” food.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
