We have been going to school for one hundred days! We enjoyed our day of doing things by tens. I loved seeing them count their show and shares and learn to count by tens through song. Each child brought ten things, and we had one hundred show and shares. At snack I set out ten cheddar kangaroos for each child plus ten for Lauren for the communal munching of one hundred kangaroos. We talked about “how many is a hundred” by looking at it on an abacus and on our 100 grids. I brought in a hundred flowers which we made into a giant 100… and then enjoyed scattering the petals when we went outside to play. We have been soaking up the warm playtime outside on the side hill and under the pine trees. We are finding tiny flowers, building campsites, and roasting pretend marshmallows.
The class has set up patterns of “traveling” during our free play block, so at circle time I’ve been asking them where we should travel all together and what we should transform our dramatic play space into. We want to go “inside a dinosaur” and into outer space. I think that this week we are going to have a Dr. Seuss inspired week. His birthday is Friday. Let’s dress up like a favorite Dr. Seuss character on Friday! We’ll read Dr. Seuss books all week and soak up the wacky rhymes. We won’t have show and share this week… I’m planning on special building activity that we can all do together. If you have any long paper tubes that you are willing to contribute I’d love to incorporate them. We are going to build a “machine” together in a Seussical style.
