The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

Meow Cats :: May 5

With chicks in the incubator and tadpoles growing in the tank, I’m a little in denial that we have three more Mondays in the school year. All of the Meow Cats seem to be enjoying learning and playing with dinosaurs. We’ll do that for a few more days and then art, stories, eggs, and the secret play we will start writing together on Monday. I do not dwell on the idea of the last day of school because it is often stressful for them. I’ll say that we are writing and performing a play as a gift for our families. They will love the idea that it is a secret and tell you every detail, but these plays evolve daily. Our story may change by May 23rd. On that Wednesday drop off will be at nine with no early drop off. The children will gather for the last time and read some special stories and get ready to perform. Bob often comes to read to us. The plays will start about nine forty five in the Tried Stone Sanctuary. You are all invited, and you are welcome to bring friends and family. The plays last about forty five minutes to an hour, and then we will sing the Garden Song one last time and dismiss your child to you.

I hope you have heard the Stegasaurus Song this week, as well as Triceratops. We’ll learn one more song this week about a Paleontologist.

On Friday we watched this video about chick development inside the egg. We’ll watch it several more times as we note how many days the eggs have been in the incubators. When the children learned that our chicks already have a heart and a heartbeat they wanted to go listen.  The chicks should be hatching on the last Monday of school, so we will have a few days with them, and hopefully they will be able to see chicks emerging from the eggs. It often takes many hours, so we should be in luck.

We have been wondering if our tadpoles are frogs or toads. ( We’ll have to read a few more Arnold Loebel stories this week.) For the record, toad tadpoles would be black. Our frog tadpoles are beautifully golden and glittery. They will not be frogs by the end of the school year, but I’ll keep posting pictures if you would like to follow along.
