It was a harmonious week in the Kindergarten Superstars. We had some great discussions about how music can be used to emote, how it can be used to tell a story, and how it effects people’s energy levels. The class had great fun dancing to different musical beats including swing, jazz, rock, bluegrass, and several others. They did a great job analyzing how the different styles made them feel, and how that affected their preferences in music.
The Superstars were also introduced to a new composer this week — Count Basie. They enjoyed dancing to his music and their reaction was delightfully humorous when I told them that his music would have been brand new when their grandparents were young! They had a lot of trouble wrapping their heads around that concept.
The class also tackled some new sight words, and also learned that building things (such as the elaborate train track patterns that they love to create together) requires mathematical thinking. Their eyes grew quite wide at this knowledge and it was great to hear them exclaim “I love math!” Additionally, the Superstars made a visit to another classroom at our school and read a book to them during their circle time! It was so wonderful to see their leadership skills at work.
The week was rounded out by listening to Peter and the Wolf, which led to a great discussion about their favorite instruments and discerning their different sounds, as well as a rousing game of Composer Bingo.
That’s it for this week. See you next time for Music Week part II!
