The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

Our First Week!

Hello 4-5 Classroom families,
Thank you all for a wonderful first week of school! We had so much fun playing, getting to know each other, and creating art inspired by ourselves!  I plan on sending a newsletter to keep all of you informed on what your children have been working on and learning about each week.  The Children’s Garden school is getting a brand new website soon. It is not up yet, but I have seen it and it is looking absolutely beautiful.  When the website is up and running, our weekly newsletter will be in the form of a blog post which will be directly linked to the new website.  Until then, we will stick with the email format to get our information to you.
This week we spent a lot of time getting used to being in the classroom together as a group. We practiced sitting on a spot at circle time, and are continuing to work on remembering to raise our hands before we talk in a whole group setting, so that we can all hear our friends and teachers. We have read many books focusing on families, starting school for the first time, and being a good friend.  Our main theme for this week was “All about me”, so we have made self portraits for our bulletin board, built our faces with jewels and shells, made our faces from play dough, and drew pictures of our families in books and our journals.  We have enjoyed trying some of the art materials in our class in a more free “process art” way, with watercolor paintings, letter stamps, pipette paintings, and simply drawing with markers or crayons.
We took a break from our theme on Thursday to focus on caterpillars, because our class caterpillar has gone into its chrysalis! Many of the children were very excited about this, so we decided to take a quick detour in our learning to observe the amazing transformation happening in our classroom!
We have also had lots of fun building train tracks and block houses and cities, and taking care of our babies and stuffed animals in the kitchen area.  The children have all been eager to try new things and seem to have enjoyed being together as a group.  We had a few rainy days last week which resulted in extra indoor playtime, but weather permitting, we will be outside to play every day!
I have included some photos from our week below.  You can also view photos on our Facebook and instagram pages.  Thank you all for sharing your wonderful children with us!
Have a great long weekend!
