They also “jumped” at the chance to hand braid their own jump ropes and were very quick to finish them and try them out.
This week we talked about state and national parks, and about conservation efforts, particularly with endangered animals. When we were discussing the Everglades, the class was asked “if any one of the animals that live here died off, or moved away, what would happen to the Everglades?”. They had some very thoughtful responses such as “if the alligators went away then the sharks would get bigger because they would have all the fish to eat to themselves!” and “maybe the swamp would get smaller”.
The Superstars also tested their poetic skills by composing Haikus based loosely on a picture we used for class discussion on Olympic National Park. It was fun to see how each child focused on a different aspect of the park: for one it was the snow on the mountains, for another it was the flowers in the valley, and for another it was the animals that live in the park. It was a joy to see each of their personalities come out in this project.
The class also solidified their use of place value using some fun manipulatives that we worked on together as a class, and they are excited to move on to the “hundreds house” on decimal street. They were pretty excited when they noticed that “place value is everywhere! Even on our calendar!”.
Next is Parks Week Part II, so stay tuned!
