The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

Playing and Learning at Home :: April 9

Are you ready for a song? It is a very awake song?

Here’s another good family dancing song about a ferris wheel. Have you ever ridden on a ferris wheel with your family? This is about a famous ferris wheel at a place called Coney Island.

I’m going to come to your mailbox later today with some things for you. Remember when we fingerpainted all of the planets while we talked about them… and then hung them up all around our classroom? I took the big planets and cut each them into twelve smaller planets so that you could have your own solar system for your family. Do you have some glue at home to glue them on? Here’s a chart if you want to put them in the right order. We didn’t make a Pluto… though some of us believe Pluto is a planet. You could cut one out of paper for your chart. You’ll also need to cut out some rings for saturn and uranus. I think a light colored crayon would be just right for that. You could also add some stars.. or glitter.. It’s all yours to make a beautiful solar system. I wish the sun was bigger, but our big sun could only be cut into so many suns. We’ll have to imagine how big the sun is. Would you write you name on your solar system chart for me and then show me a picture? We could share them in our Instagram pictures.

There is also a canvas bag in there. Hold onto that, and we are going to make our mamas a present for Mother’s Day. I’ll show you how next week.

You’ll find some rainbows in there too, and those are TATTOOS.

It is almost the middle of April and if we were in our classroom we would be starting to hatch our baby chicks. It is probably my favorite time of the year. Wynne and I were talking yesterday, and we are going to start off the year with a schoolwide hatch when we go back in the fall.

Some of the Honeybees have chickens at their house already.

How long do you think it takes to hatch some chicks? It takes twenty one days, and it is hard to wait that long.

These babies hatched in the Honeybee classroom.

We can learn a little bit about chicks this spring, and then we’ll be all ready to get started when we go back to school. Did you know that chickens are distant relatives of the dinosaurs? Let’s talk about the way chickens eat tomorrow. Did you know that chickens eat rocks and grit with their food to help break it down. Some dinosaurs did the same thing and paleontologists have found these rocks in the stomachs of fossilized dinosaurs.

Want to paint some baby chicks? Have you ever painted with a fork? You’ll need a fork, some plain paper, and a plate to put your paint on. Remember chicks come in all different colors, and you could even mix two colors. What can you use for eyes for your chick? Cut out some little orange beaks… or any color really. You can draw on the feet with a crayon. You can see my chicken’s little feet in the picture here. They have three toes.

Do you know the story of Chicken Little.

And here’s one you might not have seen…. just for fun. Do you need a bath?

Put your hands in the air and say it with me Honeybees… Wherever you are we wish you well.
