Hello, Bluebird Families!
I hope you all enjoyed some time together over the long weekend, with Martin Luther King, Jr. observance day on Monday. We had another fun, but short week in Kindergarten! We jumped into our studies, comparing a globe and a flat map, locating the North Pole, the Arctic , the South Pole, and Antarctica. We discovered that although they are very cold places, there are some big differences. For example, the North Pole is located in the icy Arctic ocean, while the South Pole is on the continent of Antarctica. We were surprised to learn that both of these places experience 6 months of constant darkness and 6 months of constant light. Ask your child about the animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctica!
We made our own maps of the earth, identifying the North and South Poles. We read several books about penguins and started our new chapter book read aloud, Mr. Popper’s Penguins. We also enjoyed making paper collage penguins, as well as finger print penguins which were inspired by Ed Emberley. As we’ve been reading lately, we’ve been identifying whether the books are real (nonfiction) or pretend (fiction) and the purpose of each (to learn true facts or to enjoy a fun imaginary story). We have also been playing a new math game where we roll a pair of dice and then add the numbers! The children are really enjoying this! They have also become quite confident in suggesting number sentences that equal the date of the month during our calendar time.
Thank you for sharing your children with me!
Anna
