Wisdom begins with wonder

The Friendly Foxes :: Week 16

Hello, Friendly Fox Families!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderfully delightful Winter Break filled with magic and memories. We have been hearing lots of lovely stories about the adventures and cozy moments which the children shared with their families. They all seem very happy to be back at school and have done a beautiful job of jumping right back into the routine, and are all so glad to see one another! The are getting along so well and being so kind to one another. They are inventing their own games and inviting others to play – always a beautiful thing to behold!
This week we welcomed Winter, our New Year, our new month, and our new theme of Winter and Snow studies. We had some fun surprises this week, including the Winter Cabin I made for them, complete with a fireplace and fire for roasting marshmallows, and mugs for hot cocoa. We made a Winter Reading Tent for cozy togetherness, we have a few new Quiet Basket toys to explore, some new art materials, with more new things to come! The biggest surprise of all, one I have been working on arranging since August, is that we were able to have a police SUV and motorcycle and a firetruck come to our school today! Thanks to Detective Wilson for coordinating this for us. The officers and firefighters were so kind and informative. We learned so much about these wonderful community helpers and the equipment they use to keep us all safe!
A wonderful segue into our Winter theme is that it actually snowed! We had a lot of fun playing outdoors in the snow, and I brought big pans of it indoors for us to play in. We made tiny snow people and snow soup! We introduced a sweet song about how snowflakes are formed, read some wonderful books about friendship and snow, played in our Winter Cabin, helped some animals get cozy in our Winter barn, played in some faux snow sensory materials and Winter small worlds, made patterns on our giant floor snowflake, painted icicles to help transform our classroom into a Winter Wonderland, and we even made beautiful paintings with frozen colored ice, and so much more!
Next week we will continue our theme and look at the science of snow, and begin our big unit about what animals do in winter. I have lots of fun things planned for the coming weeks!
Thank you for all you do!WynneNancy & Christina
