Hello, Friendly Fox Families!
We’ve had a wonderful week of Winter and Snow studies and activities, and we’ve begun our “Animals in Winter” unit. It may snow tomorrow (Saturday) so maybe your child can tell you all about some of the fun things we’ve learned this week! The weather has been so mild and we have been enjoying our outdoor play, yet it will be great to get some Winter weather!
This week we read a wonderful book about the science of snow, called “The Story of Snow,” and we learned lots of amazing things about snowflakes such as how the form from just a speck of something floating in the atmosphere, collecting freezing water droplets along their way to earth, the beautiful shapes they can become, how unique they are, and even how big they can get! We made our own snowflakes with water droplet dots, made our January calendar pages, and played in tiny Winter Wonderlands. We read another wonderful book, “Why is it Snowing” and we learned about “Snowflake Bentley,” the first person to photograph snowflakes. We looked at his beautiful photography (lots of “oooos” and “aaaaahhhhs!”), made our own Winter collages, made playdough snowpeople, and added our sweet Snowflake song to our special journals. We read “Animals in Winter” all together and then made our own take-home copies to share with our families, played a fun Snowman button counting game, built our own beautiful snowflakes out of loose parts, and played in a miniature Winter animal wonderland. We began our “Animals in Winter” theme by learning about migration for two days. We read a book about Humpback Whales and learned how they are mammals like us, and the mothers even stroke their babies with their fins! We talked about how they care for one another and their migration habits, then we colored a big ocean and made our own Humpback Whale calves; we even played with whales in water! Today we talked about Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and their migration habits. We learned some really amazing things, such as how they fly 500 miles over the ocean without stopping! We made our own beautiful hummingbirds, played a fun snowman alphabet bean bag toss game, played in our pizza kitchen, and added our new Winter Animals poem to our special journals. We enjoyed Music with Marci and stories with Bob this week as well.
Next week we will continue our Animals in Winter theme and learn about hibernation and adaptation. I have lots of fun activities planned for this unit!
