Hello, Friendly Fox Families!
We’ve had a wonderful week learning all about the Arctic region and the animals that live there. We have looked at the globe every day and talked about the North Pole, the Arctic Circle, how cold it is and how amazing it is that animals can survive up there! We have talked about how it is also very cold at the South Pole, but that completely different animals live there. We know that penguins and polar bears don’t live together! We have also been closely watching our “Mossy” gardens, and after seven short days they are lush and ready to bring home! The children have been delighted with these.
We learned all about Arctic Foxes one day, which was exciting since we are the Friendly Foxes! We made our own Arctic Foxes to bring home and we got to decide if we wanted them to have a dark summer coat or a fluffy white winter coat. We welcomed February with new calendar pages, practiced drawing and writing in some glittery salt trays, and played with all sorts of Arctic animals in sensory bins. We read “Arctic Fives Arrive,” and took a closer look at Snowy Owls. We made some sweet fluffy Snowy Owls to bring home and played with animals on some floating ice – we loved this! We learned all about Narwhals, “the unicorns of the sea,” and made our own to hang up – they are beautiful! We measured out on the floor how long they can be: seventeen feet! We played with some narwhals in our giant water table together and played a really fun Winter movement game together. We learned about harp seals, and made our own baby harp seals to bring home, played a fun snowflake matching game, and made some illuminated structures with our colored magnatiles. Today we enjoyed another Jan Brett book, “Annie and the Wild Animals.” We had a sweet morning of making free art creations, painting with colored ice, and making Arctic animal tracks in playdough. We did all of this and more! We had a wonderful time in Music class with Marci this week, and with Bob at Storytime.
Next week will be very busy as we extend our Arctic studies and celebrate the 100th day of school and some birthdays, as well as observing Valentine’s Day with some friendship activities. I will send out a follow-up email with details about these events. Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us!
Warmly, Wynne, Nancy, and Christina
