Hello, Friendly Foxes!
We have had a wonderful week learning all about the Owls of Virginia. Owls are such fascinating creatures and it is so much fun to learn about the animals who live right here among us in our own forests, and that we might even be able to hear them at night if we are quiet and still. We have had lots of fun learning so many amazing things about owls together, and hopefully you will be hearing lots of interesting things about them at home! Ask your Friendly Fox about how owls’ eyes work, and where their ears are, how many talons they have, what their babies are called, or what their different calls sound like and they might surprise you by how much they know already!
We started off the week learning about Eastern Screech Owls, reading a great book, listening to their calls, reading in our giant Owl reading nest with little owlets, making our own flapping screech owls and playing in some sweet nesting owl bins. Next we learned all about Barred Owls – ask your child what their call sounds like! We made some “O is for Owl and Owlet” art, played with some tiny owls, played a fun owl shape matching game, and made some playdough owls. On Wednesday, we learned about Saw Whet Owls – they are the smallest, and often only come through Virginia in the Winter. We made some happy little Saw Whet Owls to roost around our room, built some challenging gear machine creations, made some lightbox patterns together, and had a wonderful time with Marci in Music class. We then learned about Barn Owls and listened to their calls, made some beautiful painted wooden owls to bring home, learned a fun fingerplay poem to put in our special journals, and enjoyed a sweet story session with Bob. Today we wrapped it up by looking at the Great Horned Owl and listening to their calls, making some wonderful free art creations, playing a fun letter matching game, playing together in our pretend pizza shop, and playing with our owls in some fun sensory bins. The Friendly Foxes are playing so kindly and creatively with one another and we are really enjoying watching them grow and blossom together!
We will kick off next week by welcoming March and celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday with some fun activities. We will then also spend a few more days learning about some of the other amazing owls who live in other parts of the world. The Friendly Foxes have really been enjoying learning all about what makes them so special! We will make a class book about our favorite owls and wrap it all up with some other fun plans.
Thank you for sharing your sweet children with us!Warmly,Wynne, Nancy and Christina
