The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

The Friendly Foxes :: Week 24

Hello, Friendly Foxes!
We have had an absolutely delightful time with our second week of Owl Studies. While last week we focused on the Owls of Virginia, this week we branched out into learning about many of the other owls that live all over the world. We have had so much fun reading about them, listening to their calls and imitating them! I am hearing so many wonderful things from our families as to how much the children are sharing at home about all they have learned and how much they love owls! This is music to my ears and makes my heart sing!
We started the week off with celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We had a lot of fun with this, from making our own Cat in the Hat hats to wear all day, to making him the author of the month, reading “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” making our own little fish puppet theaters, catching fish in water bins, playing one of our favorite alphabet games and welcoming March by making our own calendar pages. We read more owl books, made owl puppets, playdough owls, and even tried a new pushpin punching activity with an owl outline, which was a huge hit! We measured ourselves against the real wingspan of the Great Grey Owl, made some funny egg carton owls, and played with lots of little owls in tiny world bins. We all agree that one of our favorite owls was the last one we learned about: the Burrowing Owls. They are hysterical to watch, and we had so much fun watching some short videos of them kicking dirt out of their burrows and turning their heads upside down! We made our own burrowing owls to bring home, added our sweet owlet song to our special journals, and our most favorite thing of the week: we dissected real owl pellets together and sorted out all the tiny bones! This is one of my favorite things to do with my class, and it was wonderful to see how much they loved it, too! We are real Ornithologists now! We wrapped up the week by making a class book, “Our Favorite Owls,” which you can read with your child when you visit. We also thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Read Across America day by sharing many of our favorite books from home.
When we return from Spring Break, we will have an exciting week of learning about caves and bats. I have lots of fun activities planned for this unit. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Spring Break, and I can’t wait to hear about your adventures!
