The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

The Friendly Foxes :: Week Twelve

What a wonderful week filled with inspiration, imagination, and art creation we have had! This unit is dear to my heart, and the children seem to have been truly enjoying it as well. We have spent the week taking close-up looks at various artists, where they found their inspiration, what media they liked to use, and how they made their pieces. The children have really been feeling so proud of their own creations, and are really looking forward to sharing them with you next week at our annual Art Show!
This week we talked about Pointillism how Georges Seurat created amazing images and colors by dotting his paints very closely together, and then we tried it ourselves. We also introduced Impressionism and noticed how different painters observed different kinds of light and subjects and used their brushes to create their work. We made our own beautiful Monet and Van Gogh creations, and the children really enjoyed using the various materials. We also looked at the Abstract art the Kandinsky liked to make. We talked about concentric circles, and how much he loved “circles inside of circles” and we made our own Kandinsky pieces. I discovered a piece of Georgia O’Keefe’s art that I had never seen before and just love, and it turned out the children loved it too, so we all made our own versions of her piece, called “Ladder to the Moon.” We also looked at how many different kinds of art O’Keefe made, and how many different subjects she looked to for inspiration. You will see all of these pieces and more on display at the Art Show next week! The children made invitations to bring home so that you can see when to visit. They seem very excited! We worked in lots of other fun activities this week to go along with our art unit, from counting Seruat dots, to building different kinds of Monet bridges with manipulatives and loose parts, to drawing and building on mirrors, and so much more. As always, we enjoyed our music time with Marci and our story time with Bob.
Looking ahead, we will finish up our Art Unit this week and look forward to seeing you touring the Art Show with your child on Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd. Don’t forget to look for the invitation! As a reminder, school closes at 12:00 on Friday the 22nd for Thanksgiving break and will re-open on Monday December 2nd for our regular schedule. I will also be sending out individual progress reports for your child. If you feel you would like a conference afterwards we can schedule one. The children are doing so beautifully and we are so pleased with how happy they all seem and how kind they are being with one another.
Thank you!Wynne, Nancy, and Christina
