It was a lively science focused week in the Honey Bee’s classroom this week as we continued to talk about spring, our chicken eggs, and our caterpillars. We put our eggs in the incubator on Thursday and are expecting a midweek hatch in 20-21 days. On the day the eggs arrived we cracked an egg at circle time to show how the eggs start. I didn’t mention that the egg we cracked from my coop is fertilized. (See the small white disc in the yolk) I brought in a sweet mama hen on Thursday and Friday, and the kids are hoping I bring in more this week. I think I’ll try for Thursday and Friday again. It is hard to wait the twenty days for baby chicks. They were so sure that today they would come in and they would be hatched.
This morning we came in to see that our Painted Lady caterpillars had more than doubled in size! Last week we made some folded process art in the colors of the painted lady, and today they are up in our classroom. The friends will get another opportunity to make a few more if they are inspired by our tree full of butterflies.
This is the that we will be watching tomorrow. We’ll watch it several more times before our chicks hatch so that we can see and imagine how much they have grown.
Today was earth day, and we made some beautiful watercolored earths for our windows. Tomorrow we will fill our birdfeeder for the birds and plant sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias, and morning glories in our little garden outside of our windows.
I’ll put up a sign up sheet for conferences this week! At some point this week, the Honey Bees and I will start talking about our class play for the last day of school, May 22nd. Our last full day of school is May 21st, and our plays/ program will be on May 22. The children will come at the regular time, and the parents will gather in the sanctuary of the church. The plays will start at nine thirty, and we are usually finished by ten thirty. We will sing the Garden Children song one last time, and your children will be dismissed to you at that time.
