The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

The Honey Bees :: Week 30

While we are waiting for those eggs to hatch we are learning about honey bees. The class has learned about life in the hive, and at circle time they are deciding whether they want to be a worker, drone, or the queen. We talked about how bees live in the wild and how humans build houses for them to live in when we want to collect their honey. We were surprised to learn that bees actually make honey for themselves! We learned that honey bees and other pollinators help plant life grow and reproduce. We also learned that bees won’t sting us unless they are afraid of us, hurt them, or are trying to take their honey.

We talked about the shape of the honeycomb, a hexagon, and we all held wooden hexagons at circle time and counted the sides. We put all of our hexagons together in the middle of the circle to make a beautiful flower shape. At snack we dipped honeycomb cereal and apples into some local honey from Catawba.

We’ve spent a lot of time counting to 21 as we watched our chick development video this week. We are hoping to have our chicks by the end of the week. I need to bring in the brooder and a heat lamp by Wednesday.

This week we’ll keep playing with bees and make our birdwatching journals.  We’ll also begin talking in earnest about our play for the last day of school. Bob has been away for two weeks, but he’ll be back this week on Tuesday.
