The Honey Bees made a list of things they like to make when they are thinking about art…. They want rainbows, unicorns, cats, and dinosaurs. They want to paint every day!!
We started off with an interactive book called Mix It Up, talking about how we mix primary colors to get secondary colors. I love listening to all of the children’s color theories. We then went to the tables to freely experiment with big paper and tempera paint in primary colors. They recreated some of the actions in the book by folding and mashing the colors together. Later in the week we read Mouse Paint, a book about three little white mice who could hide from a cat on a piece of white paper, but then they dipped their feet into red, blue, and yellow paint. We painted like mice with bright acrylic paint on Friday.
Midweek we watched Picasso paint on glass and attempted to recreate this experience. We watched several videos like this, and the kids were very aware of the mood of the music. We all got a chance to paint on glass and experience looking at our work from both sides, becoming part of our art via photograph and video. I did post some sneak peeks, but all of these experiences will be documented in our art show at the end of next week. The classroom will be open to tour on Thursday and Friday morning from 8:30-9:15 and at 3:00 on Thursday. On Thursday and Friday we can also DRESS UP as our favorite artist, art supply, or concept. Last year Lauren was a paintbrush and I was Frida Kahlo!
I have a schedule of artists and projects for the next two weeks that look at Claude Monet, Yayoi Kusama, Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollack and Kandinsky. I use well known artists just as jumping off points for process based explorations, sensory experiences, and to introduce new language about art.
I still need some robot parts this week if you have any incredible robot-ish recycling. I’m hoping our robot sculpture might spark some interest in robots and a future robot inquiry.
There’s a parent teacher conference sign up sheet outside the door. It is just a start and if you need to be creative about a time just let me know.
Thank you for sharing these passionate creative tiny people with us.
