We read an Alaskan folk tale about the Raven and the Sun this week and and an animal book about a totem pole that came to life. Today we started making Tlinglit inspired animals to create our own totem pole.
We are reading books and playing in our igloo, and we’ll watch “How to Build an Igloo” from the 1922 documentary Nanook of the North. The young children are playing while their father builds the igloo, and it shows how they make a window by cutting a frozen piece of ice. The child is playing with a Husky puppy and a small sled. The short film shows them dragging a small seal into their igloo and telling that this is their only food until they hunt again. We’ll sing the Ookyook song a few more times before we depart for a warmer climate.
