Our week wasn’t as space themed as I had planned, but our play takes many directions and tangents. Monday we began with one of my favorite process art experiements. We used large paper, a rolling pin, and about six colors. Our only limitation was that we were only going to roll eight times.
On Tuesday we used a globe and a model moon to show how the moon phases change throughout the month. We then “ate the moon,” enjoying the oranges that I sliced into the phases. The Honeybees loved the book Mooncake, and this week we’ll read more Frank Asch stories about Bear and the moon.
On Wednesday we celebrated the 100th day of school. We made ten piles of ten pinecones in the woods, and joyfully stomped on them. I did 100 MOTIONS with them in groups of ten, and we learned to sing the tens from ten to one hundred. We filled ten train cars with ten unifix cubes to make a train, and at snacktim we ate ten cheddar bunnies and ten cheerios while adding the totals at the table. We also discovered that one of our apple seeds has sprouted. The Forest Makers were very happy and confident about our abilities to grow trees. They are also worried that the ceiling isn’t high enough.
On Thursday we read “What Miss Mitchell Saw,” a picture book about Maria Mitchell. We learned about comets, and then got to hold a real meteorite. We generally enjoyed lots of muddy play on the big hill this week. Did you hear about the schoolwide attempt to build a river?
On Friday we made robots with air dry clay and loose parts, celebrated Valentines Day with our friends, and read the sequel to Dragon’s Love Tacos…. Dragons Love Tacos 2.
This week we’ll circle back around to the ISS and how rockets fly back and forth. I’ll bring my telescope and hopefully we can do some moon viewing. We’ll start off the week with two friends turning 4! I really want to make our room into the solar system with all the planets and the asteroid belt!
