The Children's Garden

Wisdom begins with wonder

The Meow Cats :: October 3 2017

The Meow Cats are finishing up our talks about nocturnal animals and spiders, and we are going to spend some time on the apple farm. We’ve made applesauce twice, and we love to crank the handle on the peeler and chop with the montessori knives. We can also eat as much as we make. We found a wolf spider in the bathroom and no one was afraid. We got him into a container so that we could look at him closer and then released him outside (s0 that he could find his mama).

We have been really interested in writing on clipboards this week in all of the play areas, so I will continue to provide supplies for letter writing and documenting our play/work. We also enjoyed reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, and we boldly made our paint dots and moved forward to fill our paper with colors and shapes. I introduced the idea of us having our own art show in November, and the Meow Cats are pretty sure that’s a good idea.

We had a friend come by today to teach us about hornets. She brought a hornets nest to dissect, showed us video of the nest while the hornets were living in it, and showed us how hornets build their nests. We acted out the hornets collecting wood and chewing it up to create the paper nest, and we created a paper mache hornets nest. We learned about the queen, the worker bees, and the baby bees. Hornets don’t store their food in a hive like honeybees. They go out and collect nectar and fruit juices every day to feed their babies.

Tomorrow we are going to have an apple tasting and will chart our favorites. We’ll also read a story about Johnny Appleseed. As the week progresses we’ll make apple art and learn how apples form on the tree.
